Why India Needs To Watch India's Daughter.

Just saw the documentary 'India's Daughter' .I am totally clueless why it has been banned in India. This sucks big time.

If the reason stated for the same is that it shows India in bad light ,then for your information it has already been broadcast on BBC UK and the second statement in prologue is 'A Delhi Court has banned this documentary in India'.It does not get more shameful than this.

The worlds largest Democratic Republic which proclaims to be the land of free speech is actually a society incapable of hearing the truth.

Unfortunately we live in a society where the blame of a Rape is on the woman. It is either because she did not dress right, she was out at night and worst of all she protested against an eve teaser. To those who think so i say F*** U.

This documentary is a mirror to our society , to all those inhuman gutless pieces of shit who do not respect woman.India has a rich culture with different communities which pray to goddesses , but at the same time we have monsters living among us who actually believe they are superior and
they have some kind of a right over woman folk. One of the convict went further and took upon himself the onus of teaching any girl not following 'Indian Culture' a lesson.

The documentary captures the story of Jyoti through the eyes of her parents and of the convicts through eyes of Mukesh Singh.

What hit me real hard is how remorseless he was. Not once did i see on his face any feeling of guilt.
He narrated the whole story without shame .It seemed as if he was trying to convince himself and his interviewer that the girl got what was coming.

This makes me think isn't this how many in the society think too.Time and again we have heard statements from people in power that girls should not go out at night , Indian girls are adopting western culture , they are going out with guys which is not right in our culture. And this is exactly
what the convict said too.He says no 'good' girl goes out at night with other men. This is again reiterated by their advocate. His statement was that  in our society no girl goes out with another guy,she should only go out with a family member only if it is really important. This comes not from an uneducated person but a person who is practicing law.One of the advocate went on to say if his daughter goes out with a guy before marriage, he will burn her down.I am ashamed that I am part of a society which has people that believe in this nonsense.

On the other side, the documentary also shows the India that gives us hope. This documentary delves into Jyoti's life through eyes of her grieving parents. She is said to be a go-getter who against all odds worked hard and studied to fulfill her dream of becoming a physiotherapist. Her father recounts an
instance from her childhood where she told her father that she wants to be doctor since a Doctor is above all professions in the world. She was supposed to start her internship the very next week and had gone out for a movie since her days ahead were going to get really busy. Her story comes out to be that of any girl next door with dreams and aspirations which were crushed by Pawan,Vinay,Mukesh,Ram ,Akshay and a Juvenile.Yes, the Juvenile is called just that,he is not
named ever.A guy who is given only 3 years for raping Jyoti and then pulling out her intestines , the reason , he was a few months short of becoming an Adult. This documentary also captures how whole of India got together in one voice against the injustice. How the reaction of public brought the case to international limelight. This is where the best of India is shown , the India which is changing , one which gives us hope.It also brings forward the huge change in our law following this case.
It shows India as a country which is learning and changing.India which is coming of age.

Now coming to the worst part of the whole issue, the response from Indian Government.Lately our government has been interfering in matters which they should not.Meenakshi Lekhi says such documentary shows India in bad light and would affect tourism.I would like to bring to her notice , India has already been termed as a country most unsafe for women.India ki izzat waise bhi kucch khaas acchi nahin hain. Already every country has special advisory to people travelling to India
in regards to women safety. What we need to do is to make our country safe for women and not shy away from the realities of life.Other argument is that such documentaries would glorify the convicts. This is like saying documentaries on 9/11 or Taj attacks glorifies the terrorists. The people who would get influenced from these videos or think of these guys as heroes are psychopaths and i do not think this documentary would change their thinking. But on the other hand the ones in India who are still human would realize how their indifference to disrespect of women encourages monsters like these rape convicts to do what they want.

Towards end of the video Mukesh raises a question which Indian administration and judiciary should answer. He is going to be hanged but why is nothing being done about the rape cases where the victim was burned to death or where eyeballs of the victim were pulled out.He said if he is hanged then in future the rapist would not leave the victim but kill her. This shows that he believes that rapes will continue and nothing can change that. This documentary is essential for us Indians since we need to answer these questions.

We can blame the cops for not acting or the judiciary for being slow.We can run away from our responsibilities. We can say we cannot do anything .But hopefully 'WHEN' people in India see this documentary they would realize we created these monsters when we told boys to protect women
instead of respecting them. When a girl who goes out with boys was called slut and the guy was called a stud.We created these monster when we told boys Don't cry like girl.We created  them when everything that is weak was associated to girls and everything that was strong to the boys.

It's about time that we as a society stand together for equality and respect for our women folk.We need to accept our shortcomings and get together to eradicate this disease from our society .We could not save Jyoti but lets work hard to save the rest.

P.S. Although this documentary is banned in India, but if you can read this blog i am sure you can find a way to watch this documentary.
